Q&A with Brian Maher, Director of Athletics at Berkeley College

If you haven’t already heard about Berkeley’s new athletic teams, you will soon.  From soccer dominance in the Hudson Valley Athletic Conference to celebrating the first season of Women’s Basketball in New York, the Knights are blazing new trails for Berkeley College.
We asked Brian Maher, Athletics Director for Berkeley College, a few questions about how he and his staff have created such stunning successes.
Thanks for sitting down with us, Brian.  How long have you served as Athletics Director at Berkeley?
I have been at Berkeley for five years.  I was named Athletics Director in February, 2008.  Before that, I worked in the Student Development and Alumni Relations Departments.
What’s your vision for the athletics program?
Basically, we provide opportunities for men and women to participate in organized sports at a variety of levels. Athletic programs encourage and empower students to develop leadership, sportsmanship, and interpersonal skills.  Participating in athletics programs also fosters a positive attitude and healthy lifestyle, and helps to create a strong sense of campus community.

Berkeley has had several different logos throughout its history.  Why choose a knight?
Having all Berkeley College athletics teams represented by a single logo standardizes and unifies our teams regardless of what campus they represent.  The knight is part of the original crest of Berkeley College, and therefore conveys a sense of history and tradition.
What are some of your priorities for this year and the upcoming year?
We plan to continue developing new intercollegiate athletic programs both in New York and in New Jersey, with a focus on women’s basketball in New Jersey and men’s and women’s volleyball in both New York and New Jersey.
What programs are you most excited about in the upcoming year?
I’m definitely looking forward to this season of women's basketball in New York. This is their first intercollegiate season and we have a very dynamic and hard working team. Also, our New York men's soccer team just won the Hudson Valley Conference championship in only their third intercollegiate season and ended the season as the 7th ranked team in the country.
You’ve also launched an Athletics News blog as well, right?
Yes, you can find our athletics press releases at http://berkeleycollegeathleticsdept.blogspot.com/
Alumni are a big part of showing and maintaining support for athletics teams.  How can alumni get involved?
Alumni are certainly a big part of our program.  For example, we recently invited our New York men's basketball alumni back for a reunion at our New York City campus.
I would recommend that alumni check out our web site and come to a game to cheer their teams on as much as possible.  And make sure to recommend Berkeley College to friends and family!
